Murray calling for big Antrim support

Antrim Chairman Jim Murray says this Saturday is a defining day for the county – and he has urged as many fans as possible to get to Casement to support our senior footballers and minor hurlers.

“Make no mistake, this is a big day for Antrim. Whatever happens to our two teams in Casement this weekend will decide whether these two county teams will carry on into their championships. I think both teams can win, but they will need plenty of support.

“Our young hurlers played well enough last week, but the conditions were poor and that didn’t suit them. This weekend we are due to have some better weather so hopefully their skills can come to the fore. Down are battling hard at this level but it would be nice to see if ‘Sambo’ and the team can push on and leave a mark on the minor All Ireland series.

When it comes to the football qualifier Jim is looking forward to welcoming Galway to Casement.

“It has been nearly 20 years since we played Galway in a national league match and I think the draw was good for Antrim. Playing at home is important and taking on someone new is a bonus for the players and the supporters. We have every reason to be confident heading into the Galway game. The players worked hard to get the right result in London and that was far from easy. I know they have put the work in since then and I think we are on the verge of an exciting qualifier run.

“All players acknowledge the impact that support can have so I really hope there are plenty of Antrim gaels there this Saturday. The teams deserve support.”
