Indoor Hurling Finalists now Known

The finalists for the Indoor hurling competitions in the Seven Towers Leisure centre on Saturday are now known. After another Saturday of intensive activity teams from Donegal, Tyrone, Derry, Antrim and Down have made the final twelve with the Achievement of the Bredagh club remarkable. They have won final spots in both Division three and four.

Organiser Owen Elliott gave another sigh of relief when he had finally rounded up all Saturdays result and indicated his pleasure at how things were progressing.”To date everything has gone smoothly and hopefully this week-ends finals will do likewise. It is great to see such a spread of teams in the six finals.”

In Division 1 Loughgiel tackle Ballygalget while Dungannon and Glenshesk do the business in the second grade.

Bredagh face All Saints in Division 3 and their second team are up against Sarsfields in grade four. Division 5 sees Coleraine and Dungannon in action with Burt and Ballycastle fighting it out for the Division 6 title.

The reigning Division 1 champions Loughiel again made their way to the Indoor hurling final where it was almost impossible to separate them from their final opponents Ballygalget. Both sides gave an exhibition of top class hurling with each side winning five game and drawing one each in their head to head.

Perhaps the only difference was that the Shamrock youngsters scored more goals, twenty six to the Down sides nineteen.

In all ninety nine goals were scored during the lengthy session of twenty one games with each of the seven participants contributing handsomely. Perhaps Rasharkin, join winners of last seasons Division 5 title were slightly out of their depth but while winning no games did manage to score five times against the best in the business.

Balycastle must feel disappointed at not qualifying at their home venue but the best they could do was two wins and a draw.

Finding an opponent for the Dungannon C side in the Division 2 final turned out to be the mystery when seven sides competed at Glengormley for the two Division 2 final spots.

With an impressive run the Dungannon third side came through with flying colours, winning five of their six games with the only defeat coming at the youngsters from Glenarm. Scoring sixteen goals and beating both Glenshesk and Loughgiel B teams, it would not be surprising if this Division 2 title went to Tyrone.

Both Glenshesk and Loughgiel ended on level points, the former winning four games with Loughgiel winning three and drawing two. They had to go head to head in a play off game with the North coast side winning three to two.

Glenshesk won this title last year when they beat St Endas by a goal while Dungannon were beaten in the Division 3 final by Creggan.

The Division 3 teams at Ballymena saw the home side All Saints come top of the pile. They went through their five games unbeaten, the only near shave a one all draw against Donegal side Buncrana.

They could indeed have come unstuck at this stage after three straight comfortable wins against Tir-na-nOg, Creggan and Glenariffe. They recovered from their minor setback to beat the side they will meet in this week-ends final, Bredagh, a goal to nil.

The Down side were also mighty impressive, that defeat to the home side and a draw with Glenariffe proving their undoing.

In all 52 goals were scored in the fifteen games, the Bredagh lads claiming fourteen with the Ballymena side just one further back. This certainly looks a thrilling final.

Firing home eighteen goals at the Coleraine venue, far travelled Down side Bredagh B, brushed aside the challenge from Coleraine, Cushendun, Glenshesk Sean Stinsons and Sarsfields to go through the Division 4 competition unscathed. Having beaten Sarsfields, the side they will meet in this week-ends final by three to nothing, they will travel to Ballymenas Seven Toweres Leisure centre in confident mood.

Sixty five goals were scored in the fifteen games with Bredagh scoring five against Coleraine and hitting Stinsons for six.

Belfast side Sarsfields also showed up well, and, apart from that slip up against the Down side, won their remaining four games.

There was no disputing the class of the Coleraine second side at the Swatragh venue where they swept all before them in Division 5. In the process they scored twenty four times , their biggest win a nine to nothing affair, as they looked in a different class from their five opponents, Sr Comgalls, Larne, Glenarm and Dungannon and the home sides second string.

All the excitement here centred on the fifteenth and final game where Dungannon and Swatragh were in action. This was a make or break game for both sides with the Eoghan Ruadh lads winning their final spot with a three to one success. With four victories and fourteen goals to their credit they just about deserved the remaining final spot.

What a pity St Josephs Glenavy, in this their first year in the competition failed to rurn up at the Ballymoney venue, reducing the games there to just ten. While they may not have figured the experience gained would have been invaluable with a Donegal and Tyrone side invoved.

In the end it was the team from Donegal, Burt who came up trumps, winning all four games and reaching yet another final. They scored fourteen goals, almost half of the total recorded, beating the second string sides of St Endas, Dungannon, and Ballycastle along with Pearses.

McQuillans also made the final, that defeat at the hands of Burt failing to knock them out of their stride as they scored six in winning their three remaining games.
