Antrim championships off to exciting start

Antrim Chairman Jim Murray has welcomed the standard of Championship matches played already this season and is looking forward to the action across both codes and all grades in the coming month.

“I am delighted at the games which were played in the football championships last weekend. Some people are even suggesting this could be the best championship in recent memory. I have heard from gaels throughout Antrim who have told me how exciting some of the games where, about the level of skill on display and perhaps most pleasing of all, the sportsmanship on display. That is absolutely vital and it is terrific to see championship games played in the right spirit. I am sure that will be repeated with the intermediate and junior hurling championships which get underway this weekend.

“Like other counties the issue of discipline has reared its head in recent times in Antrim. As Chairman, I am 100% determined to stamp out ill discipline, wherever we find it, and that goes for the whole county management committee. Attacks against referees and on players are beyond the pale and the CCC will be ruthless in handing down appropriate punishments. Clubs support this stance and it is something I will continue to highlight and underline at county committee meetings.

“Players from every one of our clubs have trained and prepared all season for the games we have coming up in quick succession over the next few weeks. Get out and take in a game if you can and support these players. Championship hurling and championship football highlight all that is positive about the club scene in Antrim.”
