Antrim Chairman Jim Murray has called on Antrim gaels to come out in force this Sunday as the county footballers begin their Allianz Division 2 campaign at home to last year’s defeated All Ireland semi finalists Kildare. Throw in at Casement Park is 2.30pm.

Jim said the football squad, like the hurlers, have put in a huge effort over this last month to get ready for the league, and he says they deserve a big home support.

“Antrim football has come a long way in two years. In 2009 we began life in Division 4 against unfashionable opposition. Those games were played in front of a few hundred hardy supporters. We have made enormous progress since then with competitive wins over Cavan, Donegal, Sligo, Derry, and Armagh amongst others. The reward for that effort is a place in Division 2 where we will be playing some huge games. Thankfully four of our seven Division 2 games are at home and against high profile, exciting teams, such as Kildare and Meath.

“Supporters can play a part in helping the boys drive on to victory in what are likely to be close games. For last year’s opener against Sligo when the match got very tight in the late stages the home support made their presence known – I want to see that repeated and increased this Sunday and beyond. The fellas are putting in the effort and the hours on the training field, they deserve support from all Antrim gaels. Do your duty and support our team.”
