Conor Johnson was in superb form as St Mary’s Belfast followed through on their Gallagher Cup success last season, by claiming the BT Leonard Cup in Ahoghill yesterday afternoon.
Cross & Passion got an excellent start with a Johnny McErlean goal in the third minute, but 4 points from Johnson had St Mary’s 0-6 to 1-1 up at the end of the first quarter.
Conor McLaughlin fired home a 21st minute goal for Ballycastle, but Johnson soloed through from the poc-out, played a neat 1-2 with Stephen Hanna and crashed home an immediate response, and his team went in at the break 1-7 to 2-3 up.
Again Ballycastle opened with a goal this time Phelim Duffin turning the sliotar in after 30 seconds. Conor Christie added a point, but Ballycastle failed to score for the next 27 minutes and Johnson got St Mary’s back on track with a goal in the 38th minute.
Further goals from Colm McAuley and Sean Shannon clinched the title for St Mary’s with Johnson rounding off a fine personal performance with his 8th point.
