Another brief report on the under 17 Football Squad. Antrim 0-13 Down 2 -5 On Saturday the 4 July a depleted Antrim squad faced Down at Jordanstown. Players had been lost to holidays, club commitments and injuries, however the 21 who turned out on the day put in another battling performance to ensure the young Saffrons came out on top again. The game itself became the walking wounded as Antrim lost four players to injury and the management hope they all make a speedy recovery. Antrim played into a strong breeze in the first half and led 5 points to 1 at half time. The scores came from R McGrady (0-03), M Gribben (0-01) and F O’Neil (0-1). At the start of the second half B Laverty scored an excellent point to put Antrim up by 5. However down came back strongly and scored 1 – 04 without reply to give them a two point lead. This however sprung Antrim into action as they hit 7 points in a row to re-establish the 5 point advantage. The points came from McGrady (0-01), M McGarry (0-01), B Laverty(0-01), S O’Neil (0-01),R Murray (0-01), D McGuiness (0-01) and N Boyd (0-01). Another lapse in concentration allowed Down to sneak a late second goal as Antrim held on for a two point victory. This was very convincing performance from the squad who should have scored at least three goals and had a penalty well saved. Thanks to D McGrath for refereeing.
