09 December 2009
Antrim’s Under 21 Panel has now been selected, following trials and duly announced for 2010. Along with this selection should come the complete package, by way of delivering a fair deal for all?

The future hopes and aspirations of Antrim GAA football are inextricably linked to and dependent upon, a high percentage of these young men adopting and adapting a positive mental attitude, combined with an avowed intention of, I can and I will, in response to the rigorous training demands, sustained personal commitment, self-discipline and team dedication, which are pre-requisite to any team success.

Encouragement and ongoing support has to be part of the package and is arguably very important at this crucial point their careers, upon reaching the final stage of their development to responsible adulthood.

There is invariably a very fine line between necessary confidence and obnoxious arrogance. It is all too often the case that some otherwise truly gifted players find great difficulty in coming to terms with sustainable values. For the less gifted, hard work and tenacity has always been key to the attainment of success.

Doubts and fears, however hidden or disguised, are often the norm at this age and cannot be dismissed or lightly discounted, when hopes, aspirations and expectation, in terms of on field performance are high.

That said, Antrim County now has in place a management structure and back-up support system, second to none other; that in itself should encourage and inspire each and every Panel player to give of his all, to become a valued and respected member of a highly disciplined and fiercely competitive team.

Antrim football has had a proud year in 2009, inspired by a fresh approach, a positive attitude and a great work ethic and again, importantly, the acceptance of the absolute imperative of good team discipline for the benefit of all. There is no known reason as to why our Under 21’s should not take heart and profit from good example; to go on to outperform in their own right and on the back of such example, of whole team effort and relative achievement. Congratulations to each and every member of the Under 21 panel.

It is fitting that Tony Mc Collum would wish to express his thanks and appreciation to the panel, for their continued commitment and enthusiasm, which is at the root of any future success. This is in effect your opportunity to wear your saffron Jersey with justifiable pride – make the best of that opportunity –go out in your turn and prove that you have earned that right; you have your county behind you. Always remember that, invariably, it is the essential dedication of the 'whole panel and back up team', that leads to achievement and success on the field.
