The Antrim county dinner to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the GAA turned out to be a roaring success as old friends from the 1969 Under 21 All Ireland winning team and the 1989 hurling final team renewed acquaintances and talked over old times.
Former Tipperary star Nicholas English, who scored 2-12 in that All Ireland final twenty years ago who was guest of honour, was his usual gracious self as he addressed the crowd. A great ambassador for the game of hurling and GAA in general.
World handball champion Fiona Shannon and her sister Sibeal Gallaher, with whom she won the world doubles title, received a standing ovation as they received presentations to mark their magnificent achievements while Seainin Daykin, who was midfield on the Antrim team that won this season’s All Ireland Ladies junior title, also received a rousing reception when picking up an award on behalf on her team.
A presentation was also made to Roisin Lynch who accepted it on behalf of the hard worling committee of Jim Murray, Tony McCollum, Tyrone Eastwood, Danny McLarnon, James Toal and Seamus O'Hare who put the event together while BBC’s Mark Sidebottom kept events flowing smoothly with a series of interviews with past players included the legendry Peter O’Hara who captained Antrim minors for three years in a row in the late forties.
