Edmund Rice PS

Edmund Rice CBPS celebrated their 40th anniversary at Pim Street in North Belfast with another Cumann na mBunscol National Award. The school has long been a leading force in the promotion of gaelic games in an area more renowned for soccer.

The school has two teams in the Cumann na mBunscol football leagues and also participates in the handball and hurling leagues with great success. This year's award was presented to the school's Gaelic Games Co-ordinator, Aiden McCrory, by GAA President Nicky Brennan at the recent Cumann na mBunscol National Wards in Kilkenny and was in recognition of the promotion of hurling in the New Lodge/Lower Antrim Road area. From Primary 1 Edmund Rice pupils can be seen playing hurley as part of their PE lessons. The school has been able to tie in with the County and Provincial coaching schemes, enabling more children to enjoy the finer skills of the camán.

National Awards
Edmund Rice teacher Aiden McCrory receives the National Award for the promotion of hurling in North Belfast. Present at the ceremony were Education Ministers Catriona Ruane and Mary Hanifin.

The school has also forged great links with the local club Pearses and together both school and club are making great strides in the promotion of hurling in this often neglected inner-city area of Belfast.

The school has also taken advantage of its Cumann na mBunscol affiliation and is developing links with primary schools in Fermanagh, Cavan and Sligo. This year they have already travelled to a Skills Development Day at Teemore's Pitch in the shadow of Sean Quinn's cement factory. Ulster Cumann na mBunscol officer Joey Donnelly and his counterpart from Sligo Eamon Mullans liaised with the Pim St school in organising this successful and enjoyable event. Already other Antrim schools are seeking to forge similar links with fellow Ulster and border area schools. Adh mór gach duine!!!
