Holy Cross - Handball Champions

Holy Cross Boys' Primary School collected the 2008 Belfast Cumman na mBunscol Handball Championships at Beechmount Leisure Centre last week.

The boys produced an impressive team performance to oust the 2007 winners, Good Shepherd Primary School. This is the second time in the school's history of the competition to triumph.

Declan Kane picked up the first point of the afternoon by edging his opponent 15-14. Both doubles teams, Cormac Gilvary & Daniel Taggart and Conor McLaughlin & Gerard McAlinden continued in the winning habit and the school led 5 points to 1 going into the last singles round. Pearce Mc Connell then secured another point for the team while Fionntan Marley and Martin Coiley battled bravely in their respective clashes with Good Shepherd.

"I'm very proud of the boys. They've trained hard all year in the Ardoyne GAA club and deserve their rewards. They showed good concentration and that helped them to edge the closer games in the final against Good Shepherd,” said coach, Mr Curran.

"Good Shepherd have dominated these Championships in recent years and it's good to see the hard efforts, which the school has made in all GAA activities, paying dividends,” he concluded.
