North Antrim Region

North Antrim now has 16 schools affiliated to the organisation and participating in our eight events held in different venues throughout the year. These events include indoor and outdoor hurling and camogie, gaelic football, skills competitions and the annual quiz.

Last year our first event was the gaelic football which was held in Glenariffe. Gaelic football is gaining strength in the Glens and the event was well attended. The final was between St Patrick's Glenariffe and Bunscoil An Chaistil. This was a nail biting final and was eventually won by the hosts, St Patrick's Glenariffe.

St Patrick's Loughgiel showed fantastic skill and determination and walked away with all of the trophies in both hurling and camogie (section A). The indoor tournaments were held in Cross and Passion College Ballycastle. In the hurling indoor final Loughgiel had a narrow win over Bunscoil An Chaistil. A hard fought victory but the boys from St Patrick's lifted the trophy. There was a more convincing victory in the camogie final with the girls beating St. Patrick's Glenariffe. By the end of December St Patrick's Loughgiel had two pieces of silverware for their trophy cabinet. This year we introduced a 'B' section for the smaller schools in North Antrim. Barnish P.S. won section B hurling and Seaview P.S. Glenarm won the camogie.

Hurls and helmets were put away for the winter and in February 2007 all schools descended on the village of Cushendun and made our way to St Ciaran's P.S. who were hosts of our quiz. The quiz was won by Glenann P.S. A very educational and entertaining day all round.

April saw the hurling and camogie moving outside and the children all headed to Dunloy for the INTO mini sevens. Again both these days were really well attended and all children thoroughly enjoyed the day despite the cold and rain! Loughgiel once again walked away with both trophies. A great achievement for St Patrick's Loughgiel. The 'B' section in hurling was won by the Braid P.S and St Ciaran's Cushendun won the camogie. This was the first piece of silver ware for both these schools. A great achievement!

The camógs and hurlers of St Patrick's won the All-County titles in Casement Park in May. Ryan McKee and Christine Laverty had the honour of playing in the All-Ireland semi- final half-time match while Shan McGrath and Brona Johnson played in the All-Ireland final. All children represented their school and county exceptionally well. The 'B' section in hurling was won by the Braid P.S and St Ciaran's Cushendun won the hurling. This was the first piece of silver ware for both these schools. A great achievement!

As the weather warmed we took out the gaelic footballs again and held a Fun Day in Cushendall. This was a great day all round and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A week later we held a hurling and camogie Skills Day in Cushendall and a great day was had by all! We are all looking forward to an exciting and eventful incoming season in the Glens!
