Antrim’s netminder Ryan McGarry reckons that if Laois are awarded a penalty tomorrow night, he is up to the task of saving it – again.
“That’s what happened in the last match and yes, if it happened again I’d have a go at saving it, that’s what I’m there for.”
The Ballycastle man who has been involved in Antrim squads since he was 17 accepts that a crack at Galway is a huge incentive but, like the rest of the team he is not looking beyond Saturday’s crucial game against Laois.
“We know Laois will be very tough, especially playing on their own pitch, we have it all to do going down there. The Westmeath match was maybe a bit closer than the final scoreline reflected, and Laois beat Westmeath so this is a step up.
“At the same time we know it is a step up and everybody is working really hard and working together. The team is fit that’s for sure and we will keep playing until the last whistle. Hopefully that’s enough to make sure we are still in the Leinster Championship on Sunday morning.”
McGarry has excelled this year with important saves in almost every outing so far. Is he pleased with his own performances to date?
“Yes I would say I am happy enough. But at the end of the day the keeper is there to make those saves, that’s my role in the team. The most important thing for the team is that we get the result on the day.”
Antrim fans will agree with that.
