Tomas: Positive mood in squad

Antrim’s Tomas McCann says that the extra week the team have to prepare for their match against Meath can help the squad clear up some injuries and can help propel Antrim towards the win required to ensure that relegation is safely avoided.

“There are a few knocks within the squad and we have had three games in a row in the last few weeks so maybe it’s not a bad time for a week’s break.”

Like the Antrim fans Tomas is at a loss to explain the performance the team delivered against Roscommon.

“It was a match when too many people had an off day and that was clear for everyone to see. But that is not the image we want to portray of our county and our team and to be fair to the fellas it doesn’t reflect the work which we have put in so far this year. So we are glad to have a chance to put that right. We want to show that the Roscommon performance is not where Antrim are right now. Antrim fans will see a different team this weekend.”

“We always said that we were not thinking about relegation or promotion at the start of the year so we are not overly thinking about it now. We just want the next game to arrive and to put in a much improved showing. ”

On his own season to date, it is clear that Tomas thinks he has much more to give.

“At the start of the National League my own fitness was behind the others and that was due to the injury, and even now I still feel that I have more to give. Having a few games behind me now is a good feeling and with each training session and each match I am feeling fitter and sharper.

“Even with the Roscommon defeat and the way we played, there is still a positive feeling in the squad. There has been something positive to take out of most games this season and if we can get a full performance over 70 minutes we believe we can give any team a good game.”
