This Saturday in Mullingar Antrim’s 2012 hurling championship campaign gets up and running. The Saffron hurlers travel to take on Westmeath in the first round of the Leinster Championship, and they will be wary of opponents who have made life difficult in league and knock out competition in recent years.

Antrim centre half back Neil McManus said today that that Antrim will be confident going into the Mullingar challenge, but aware that Westmeath pose a real threat to their Leinster ambitions.

“Yes we are confident, and that is based on togetherness and a solid spirit within the squad. When you look at our team it is a very strong team and even on the bench there are some very well known names. So I think we have strength and depth as we begin our campaign.

“But games against Westmeath have been very tight and they beat us in the league just the year before last. They will want to make an impression on the Leinster championship as well and we know how close they ran Galway last year.”

McManus is looking towards a long summer with Antrim, providing they can get over the first battle this weekend.

“How far we progress is up to us. It is in our own hands. If we win the battle on Saturday we can win the game, and then get back to work to prepare for the next challenge. I hope there is a big travelling support there on Saturday to cheer on the team.”
Asked if fans can expect a few scores from the half back line Neil happily accepts the challenge.

“Yes, it would be nice to get a few points on the board. If the defence is helping out with scores that gives the whole team a lift. Yeah – I’d like to get on the scoreboard!”
