Lamh Dhearg produced a brilliant fightback to win Sunday’s Intermediate Hurling Championship at Casement Park as they beat Cloughmills by 2-9 to 1-9. Minutes before the end of the opening half the Cloughmills appeared to be coasting to victory as they led by 0-6 to 0-2, despite playing into the teeth of a near gale-force wind. However the game changed dramatically when Lamh Dhearg were awarded a twenty-metre free in first-half injury time and up stepped Brendan Herron to fire the ball to the St Brigid’s net.
The goal not only lifted Lamh Dhearg but totally deflated Cloughmills who should still have been in a strong position considering they had wind advantage in the second-half. However there was a complete transformation after the change of ends as Lamh Dhearg’s superiority had to be seen to be believed. Despite hitting a series of wides their tough battling style completely overpowered their opponents and boosted by the introduction of substitute Paddy Cunningham they pulled six points clear, their second goal coming from Cunningham in the fifty-fourth minute.
