Five goals and a point from full-forward Saul McCaughan helped Cross & Passion College Ballycastle to victory over St Mary’s CBS in Tuesday’s BT Foresters’ Cup final at Creggan.
The Ballycastle clubman linked brilliantly with Cushendall’s Cormac McClafferty in a two man full forward line, McLafferty also contributing handsomely with two goals and five points in a fantastic individual display.
St Mary’s started well and with danger man Conor Johnston showing his great range of skills, despite being double marked, they pulled 0-4 to 0-1 ahead after ten minutes
McLafferty got in for the first Ballycastle goal in the 11th minute and they added 3 points from Campbell, McLafferty and Butler before St Mary’s replied.
McCaughan grabbed his first goal just before the break after McLafferty’s original shot had been saved and it was clear that the Ballycastle school were gaining an edge as they went in at half-time leading by 2-4 to 0-6.
Conor Johnston reduced the gap when he pointed soon after the restart, but with Ryan McCambridge excelling at midfield for Cross & Passion they struck two telling blows with well-worked goals for McCaughan in the 37th and 39th minutes.
Domhnaill Moran pulled a goal back for St Mary’s, but it was clear there was only going to be one winner at this stage and another brace of goals from McCaughan followed by a second from McLafferty near the end sealed a comprehensive win.
