The All County Hurling League got underway on Wednesday evening with some hard fought games played out. Loughgiel were five point winners over Ruairi Og in Cushendall in a hard fought game, though as Cushendall manager ‘Gaza’ McCambridge admitted afterwards ‘In fairness to Loughgiel they were more than five points betrer than us’.
A goal from Paddy McGill had given the home side an early advantage but Loughgiel hit back and boosted by a goal from Liam Watson went on to lead by 1-7 to 1-6 at half-time. The second second-half saw the Shamrocks dominate most of the play with Watson again to the fore and they ended up winners 1-16 to 1-11 to give their new management team of PJ O’Mullan (jnr), Mick O’Connell and Jim Nelson a winning start to their campaign.
Elswhere Dunloy had six points to spare over Ballycastle in a high scoring game which ended 3-12 to 2-9, Glenariffe made a winning start to their Division One campaign with a 1-14 to 1-11 win over Ballygalget in Waterfoot while in the Ards derby Ballycran beat Portaferry by 2-12 to 0-12.
