Having been singled out on so many previous occasions, in consequence of my measured comments and writing style and perhaps being frequently at odds with the norm, I am increasingly inclined to think carefully before commenting upon any issue.

However, as a county PRO first and foremost, in this context and an unapologetic Antrim Gael, who can neither accept nor tolerate undue or unfair criticism of County GAA, from those otherwise perhaps seemingly ashamed or embittered, I feel it incumbent upon myself to speak out positively, on behalf of our teams and endeavours and thereby to ensure, in so far as lies within my power, we are seen to put our best foot forward when and wherever possible.

2009 was certainly a watershed for Antrim Senior Football. I think it safe to say that we can all feel much better for that; change in fortunes was long overdue and did not come about by any freak accident. Progress came about on the back of vision, commitment and determination; there were many contributors to this. Progress often comes about by doing things differently; by daring to be different. That in itself requires leadership and we certainly have that within Antrim Senior football. However, leadership without full commitment and loyalty of participants and supporters is all too often futile.

It has been said that the difference between a chump and a champ is dedication, which in turn demands purpose, discipline, belief, and sustained effort at the highest personal level attainable. That is a big ask of any one and an even bigger ask of any team but the rewards for such dedication are awesome. Antrim County is once again a justly proud County in many respects but the journey is far from over. We have new opportunity, to climb higher and achieve more in 2010 and we have the talent, leadership, hunger and the commitment to do that.

I sincerely believe that there is everything to gain by getting behind all of our county teams, of whatever discipline, encouraging them always and often to accept rigorous self discipline, the very stuff of all successful athletes, and to respond to and respect leadership, so as to individually and collectively out-perform for the greater benefit of all.

For your information I am not on any substances, neither do I need wine or happy pills. For most of my life I have dared to be different and for that I make no apology. In my turn I have climbed a few stiff hills, moved a few mountains and achieved more than a few set-goals. To do this I tore up a couple of pages on the way through life. Panic was one, for it serves no useful purpose of which I am aware. Fear of failure is another major obstacle – face up to it and plough on regardless.

It is refreshing and good that an Antrim county Jersey is once again a treasured possession for so many county supporters, especially the young ones. Good luck to each and every Antrim County Panel Player, at every level and in every discipline, for 2010 and a Happy New Year to all.
