Schools Day 125

20 April 2009
In 2009 we will be celebrating one hundred and twenty five years since the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank all schools and teachers in Ireland for their significant contribution to our national games. Teachers have played a critical role in the development of Gaelic games through supporting player, coach and referee training as well as the continued growth in inter school Go Games blitzes. We sincerely appreciate the work of all in the education sector who have helped in providing access to our games to generations of children.

During 2009 we encourage all schools to celebrate GAA 125. Within the classroom, Gaelic games can be celebrated through completing one of the many lessons from the Céim ar Aghaidh/Step Ahead education resources

April 24th is GAA 125 Schools Day. On this day we would encourage schools to celebrate Gaelic games. It could involve completing some Gaelic games themed lessons, playing some fun Gaelic games (hurling/camogie, Gaelic football, handball or rounders), inviting a past or present GAA personality to talk to pupils or wearing a GAA jersey to school.

The Irish Times and The Sisk Group, who are both celebrating anniversaries this year, have teamed up with the GAA and Cumann na mBunscol to hold a photography competition for schools who participate in the day. Simply send your details and a photograph of your GAA 125 School’s Day by e mail to photocomp@irishtimes.com .Be creative and your school could be a winner of a training kit which includes footballs, sliothars, poles , sports markers , heavy duty wheel bag, and a jacket for the teacher.

It is our sincere wish that our school children continue to enjoy Gaelic games in a fun and safe environment and we greatly appreciate the continued work of teachers in making this happen. I hope that the entire school community will enjoy celebrating our 125th anniversary.

Is Mise le Fíor Mheas
