Some readers will already have heard that Gilbert Mc Ilhatton ''Gilly'' was recently honoured in Croke Park, by way of the presentation to him of a large medallion. This Award was in due recognition of his dedication and service to GAA over a period now in excess of some 64 years. We can be truly grateful for the fact that Gilly, a respected gentleman within GAA, is still going strong and that there is every indication that he will be around for a very long time to come.

At outset I am sure that fellow Antrim Gaels would want to warmly applaud this timely recognition for a man who has voluntarily served John Mitchells GAC, throughout all of those years and has served on the committee with the exception of two periods only. Gilly was first elected to John Mitchell’s committee at age 14, and then elected to the position of Club Secretary at the age of 18. He is a modest man and quick to point out that he has worked at every level for his club.

A stated priority for Gilly, has always been looking after players, whether this was washing jerseys, organising games or fighting his corner within administration. Gilly was and is a truly dedicated clubman, followed closely by his interest and ‘hands on’ involvement as a former selector with Antrim GAA. Over some 64 years Gilly has seen both the good days and the bad. All storms weathered; he is a stalwart for the aims and objectives of GAA. Both John Mitchells and Antrim County have been and are the beneficiaries of his long and dedicated service. Well done and well deserved Gilly – your dedication sets an example par excellence. ‘’
